I’m Charles Murphy reporting. Wheeler Estates in Hendry County again complained to commissioners about truck parking, noise, turtles and a tower project. Randy Miller wants the county to take action. Because this builder is violating the law and he’s just bearing. You told me three years ago you were going to do something. And I asked you, you told me that staff was going to look into it and that you were going to do something. County Commissioner Mitchell Wills would like to find a solution for the dangerous trucks driving too fast. Backing these trucks out, there is no street lights out there. You’re going to back these trucks out, someone’s going to hit the back of it. Or on a different situation, maybe his truck’s parked on the right of way and I had a heart attack in my house and the ambulance couldn’t get to me because his truck was blocking the way to me. So really I want you to please look at this. Russell Ballard has long complained about noise coming from trucks at three and four in the morning. I want to ask that you guys seriously consider banning the triaxial semis. Nobody’s personal little van, single axle vehicle making a living, nothing like that. I’m talking about triaxial dump trucks that are at least 50, 53 foot long and then the semi tractor trailer. Palm Beach schools debated artificial intelligence and learning about the private lives of students. School board member Edwin Ferguson says they have policies in place now to have students expelled for off-campus crimes and incidents. He says he doesn’t support any new restrictions, noting Palm Beach school police only can enforce laws on school property. Threatening to throw, project, place or discharge any destructive device with intent to do bodily harm to any person or with intent to damage to the property of any person. Where though? On school property or off school property does kind of matter. And again I don’t think you should even put that in there because you already have other policies that address this outside of school. That’s the felony suspension rule and ultimately I guess expulsion. Shaker Paws says she’s concerned about students being expelled under the new policy. I can tell you about a middle school girl who wrote about murder. Well that sounds alarming right? But it was part of a mystery novel that she was writing and she was in fact a beautiful writer. But she would be expelled under this policy. Glades County asking for help from Okeechobee County to provide fire and EMS protection. The existing contract ends at the end of this month. They have responded to 240 calls in Glades County in the past year as Okeechobee Fire Rescue. They are asking for $200,000 to provide fire protection. Glades County thinks a full station might cost them $2 million per year. County Commissioner Tim Stanley says he understands the requests. I can’t blame Okeechobee for coming and wanting, because they are the only fire protection and ambulance service that we have on that end of the county. I mean they respond. I mean their citizens are paying us right now and they’re coming out and doing ours for free. I’m sure their citizens found out that we were getting free service. They would be very happy. An Alva man, 35 year old Dalton Taylor, was sentenced to 35 years in prison this week. In 2023, he murdered his girlfriend, Shanika Gladnew, shooting her multiple times in their couple’s home on 3rd Street in Alva. The shooting on July 13th of 2023. Detectives found the deceased dead in the bedroom, apparently with a .40 caliber Smith & Wesson firearm. Multiple projectile fragments were found at the crime scene. The suspect initially told detectives that he had woken up to the sound of seven gunshots inside the residence. He said he could not call for help because they don’t have a phone. Investigators say he changed his story several times. I’m Charles Murphy, WAFC News.
