I’m Charles Murphy reporting. Henry County Commissioners delayed until October 28th a ruling on a bid challenge for mowing along county roads. The county staff had recommended Marks Excavating as the winning bid. The current contractor, King’s Highway Services, challenged the bid award. Jamie with King Highway wanted the contract and their company name. Only when we bid this project did we ever get complaints of our work. Before that we never got one complaint or said you guys are doing it wrong or you’re not doing it right or you’re doing it in too long of a time or anything like that. The county approved a Comprehensive Plan Amendment to allow a warehouse for storage of vehicles in Cluiston. 12 acres of property would be developed at 6110 U.S. 27. It would be used for a 2,000 square foot warehouse. The property would be rezoned from agriculture to planned unit development. The county approved capital project funding of close to $22 million including money for a taxiway pavement project at Air Glades, various sidewalks and road resurfacing across the community. $8.75 million will be spent at Air Glades and $5.4 million at the Fort Donaud Swing Bridge Rehabilitation Project. Candidate for Congress, Republican Dan Green, says his constituents want prices to drop. He’s running in District 9, the new district that would cover Okeechobee Highlands and Glades County. He says his plan to reduce prices would be reducing the national debt and government regulations. It’s a multi-year process. It’s going to be a lot of work. It’s going to require both parties. But I think we have to cut the spending. We’ve got to be thoughtful about it. We’ve got to reduce the size of government but also grow the economy as well. With the economy growing, we can have more revenue. We can reduce the debt and try to pay it off. Green also would like to see the war in Iran stopped. I think we need to have stability in the Middle East, especially in this war with Iran. I think it was correct for President Trump to bomb the nuclear infrastructure of Iran. We don’t want them to become a nuclear-armed power. But I think diplomacy is probably the way forward. I think we’re getting close to that. And if that happens, of course, we’ll have more stability in prices for gas. Palm Beach County Commissioners issued a proclamation for United Against Hate Week. The Palm Beach County State Attorney’s Office featured a dedicated hate crimes unit and task force. Freddie Menard heads up that unit. That hate crimes have no place here and how we cannot and will not allow crimes based on hatred, intolerance or prejudice to become accepted as part of our community. Commissioners also proclaimed October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month. A Moorhaven resident was concerned about late fees on electric and water bills due to slow mail service. Clerk Ashley Wells admitted some bills get there late. The post office, I will tell you, we have had a lot of issues with them lately. A lot of customers have been coming in telling us they’re not receiving their bills. Community Manager Larry Tibbs says there is a continuing concern about the post office. Apparently, the new postmaster general has implemented new mail processing procedures and there seems to be no real answer on what those procedures are. For example, mail delivered to the Moorhaven post office, you have to wonder where it goes to be processed and then returned to Moorhaven for delivery. Two Belle Glade women are facing charges in Collier County after they were seen on camera stealing shoes. Facing charges are LaFawn Lord and Joquita Sewell. Lord will also face traffic charges. Sewell had an arrest warrant out of Alabama. Sewell admitted to taking four boxes worth of shoes, saying she had no money to pay for her child’s school shoes and that she wouldn’t go to school without shoes. Cameras caught the vehicle they left the store in and a deputy spotted the vehicle a short time later. I’m Charles Murphy, WAFC News.
