I’m Charles Murphy reporting. LaBelle City Commissioner Bobbi Spratt wants Henry County Schools to put cameras on school bus stop arms. She wants to stop motorists from passing school buses. She noted Lee County did this and they’ve had some 27,000 violations and collected over 6.2 million in fines from motorists. Spratt says if it’s happening in Lee County, she can guarantee it’s happening in Henry County. We have had children hit at bus stops. That to me is just unconscious, unconscious of all. The schools did put cameras in school zones recently. A 29-year-old Henry County man is facing charges of firing a weapon in public and possession of a weapon by a convicted felon. It follows a report of gunshots being fired on Helms Road. Henry County’s finest responded, learned a black SUV was involved and pulled over a suspicious vehicle nearby on South Edgewater Circle at Eucalyptus Boulevard. They found a .38 caliber revolver in the glove compartment. There were 15 spent shell casings in the road at the scene of the shooting. There was no one injured. Jaime O’Quinn admitted they were standing in the roadway shooting at the ground. They did not give any reason for this. A passenger was also charged with discharging a firearm in a public place and apparently was a minor as they did not release its name. A 24-year-old LaBelle woman is facing charges of attempted burglary and attempted kidnapping for an incident on March 24th. Ana High Garcia was arrested on a warrant last week. The incident was caught on video at a LaBelle residence. The video appeared to show the suspect approach a residence on foot, knocking on the front door and then forcibly grabbing the occupant by the arm and a struggle ensued over the child. She fled and met a second Hispanic female and left the scene. She admitted to taking the child from the residence. Fire chief in Western Palm Beach County, Geraldine Jaramillo says with school out, car crashes have increased this summer in the Glades. She says the number went from 10 to 24 in the past month. So I know it doesn’t mean much to you guys, but to us, we see the horrific things that can happen in a car accident. So please be safe out there, you know, slow down, especially with the kids out of school and stuff like that. Pahokee City took no action on the condemned Parker building. Attorney Bernadette Norris Weeks says the problem is the landowner and not the city and not code enforcement. She says the fingers have been pointed in the wrong direction. The fingers should really be pointed more so on the landlord, but nobody’s really talking about that. People are talking about the city of Pahokee, which is so unfortunate because as I see this issue unfold over weeks, it looks like, you know, the city is the bad guy when really it’s not so much the city, the city is not a social services organization. It’s good that people are reaching out and helping, but you know, that is not the city’s place. It’s really the landlord which should be responsible for making sure that they’re keeping a condition of this building in a safe condition. I’m Charles Murphy, WAFC News.
