I’m Charles Murphy reporting. The LaBelle Fire Department presented the Hero Award to Lazaro Alonso Lara. He noticed something wasn’t right and quickly brought it to the attention of teachers at LaBelle High School. A stove had accidentally been turned on with items left on top causing them to begin catching fire. He saw something and said something. Teachers were able to turn the stove off before the situation became hazardous. Henry County Commissioner Emma Bird will host a Harlem community meeting next week, next Monday, June 8th at 6pm. Topics to be discussed include Harlem Academy, Mosquito Control and Code Enforcement, the community meeting at the Harlem Civic Center on 7th Street. A Pahokee man was behind the wheel, striking and killing a pedestrian in West Palm Beach. It happens at South Military Trail and Forest Hill Boulevard. The driver, Luis Montalban, was driving a 2024 Toyota SUV. The victim and pedestrian, John Gray DeGregorio, apparently darted or dashed across the northbound lane and was struck by the vehicle. A clueless man facing charges of resisting arrest and failing to register a vehicle, while also getting a ticket for a school zone infraction. Seminole Police say Brandon Greer was traveling at speeds well above the posted 30 mph speed limit on Josie Billy Highway and had no visible tag on the motorcycle. It also had no headlight, taillight or blinkers. It was paced at going 50 mph in a 30 mph zone and over 50 mph in a 15 mph school zone. The suspect also had no identification on his person. He also was picked up on a felony warrant out of St. Lucie County that alleges felony fleeing and eluding police. Two clueless men are charged with attempting to steal nearly $1,600 worth of items from the Walmart in Okeechobee. Okeechobee Police identified them as Irvin Hymes and Diego Perez. They did chase them through the store but were able to catch him on the property. One got as far as the Murphy USA gas station. Hymes was charged with possession of cocaine and grand theft. Diego Perez was charged with resisting arrest without violence and grand theft. It’s June 1st and it is the official start of the Florida hurricane season. Tammy Trujillo has more. Forecasters with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said this year’s Atlantic hurricane season is expected to be below normal. NOAA is predicting 8 to 14 named storms with 3 to 6 becoming hurricanes and up to 3 reaching major strength, category 3 or higher. The agency says the developing El Nino could limit storm activity. Forecasters stress the outlook does not predict landfalls and warns it only takes one storm to make for a dangerous hurricane season. The season runs through November 30th. I’m Tammy Trujillo. There hasn’t been any impact on our roads and the amount of traffic by gas prices. The Florida Highway Patrol is also hoping to keep young drivers safe this summer, telling them not to take these social media challenges like getting close to mirrors of cars when they pass them. If you are treating our roadways you know to engage in some sort of contest or social media challenge you’re engaging in in behavior that’s ultimately going to get you in a whole lot of trouble. U.S. Senator Ashley Moody wants a safe summer. She urges parents to talk to their children. For parents now is the time to talk to your teens about safe driving habits that can save lives. Together we’ll make a difference and it’ll be a safer summer for every Florida family. Stay safe Florida. I’m Charles Murphy, WAFC News.
