Director Shelley Cole says they were the first in the nation to start a student crime stop program to stop crime at school. They also were the first in the nation to take tips about crimes against animals. We were also the first program to take animal abuse tips, not just dogs and cats, but cows and horses, and we work very closely with animal control. Moorhaven’s Chalunitka Festival last weekend reported increased attendance. The concession stand was up about 70% over the previous record sales on Friday night. The parade was also larger. Glades County Sheriff David Harden reported no arrests from the festival. The livestock sale generated an estimated just over $500,000 this year. County Commissioner Hattie Taylor called it a great turnout. It was a great time, and I am proud of our community. When we get together, and it’s been something that ever since I was a child, I can remember walking down the street to Avenue L, and it’s just a fun time, a reunion, a family and friends. Glades County commissioners honored Larry Cohens from the road department. He’s retiring after 49 years of service. The Moorhaven City Council says code enforcement forms being used by the city were legally inadequate. Attorney Steve Ramouni says there are minimum notice requirements for notices of violation under state law. He says the forms being used could not be usable in court. Mayor Clay Browning has been frustrated with these code enforcement issues. He says the staff need to make sure the code enforcement forms are usable. Because six months from now, I’m not gonna be sitting here at this table and listen to that conversation again. That’s done, that’s over. This council and the residents of Moorhaven have begged and begged and begged to fix this mess, and we ain’t done it. Let’s get this right. I’m done with this now. I promise you I’m done with it. The city recently honored Julie Perry, renaming Third Street in her honor. A committee had been formed to organize the special event. The Christmas decorating contest winners in Moorhaven this year were Wesley and Veronica Spivey for first place, Bertha Borton for second place and Edna Velez third place. A towing business is looking for an appropriate property to open up in Moorhaven. I’m Charles Murphy, WAFC News.
