I’m Charles Murphy reporting. A Henry County man was sentenced to 10 years in prison for a stabbing in 2023. Adolfo Andres pled no contest to charges of burglary with a battery, attempted burglary of a conveyance or vehicle, and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. Henry County deputies say the stabbing occurred on May 8th of 2023 at 850 Main Street in LaBelle. There were several victims. Andres allegedly attacked the victims as they returned home while also breaking out a window to the home and stabbing a sleeping man. There was also a juvenile charged in the stabbing. One victim was hospitalized. The original arresting charge was attempted felony murder. The Glades County School Board honored the Moorhaven Terriers varsity girls basketball team for their accomplishments this year. They won district and went 25-0 during the regular season. The city of Pahokee continues to have fireworks at their commission meetings. Vice Mayor Sankwita Cowan-Williams said she wouldn’t attend meetings in person for a while after members of the interim city manager’s family made threats to her at the December meeting. The commission also approved spending to secure a vendor for the July 4th fireworks. They’re hoping to get a contract under $30,000. City officials say it was an emergency as every community is trying to set up celebrations for the 250th birthday of the country. Williams says she thought it was not an emergency and would get them in trouble with auditors and the Palm Beach Auditor General. Cowan-Williams says she’s been left out of the loop when it comes to decisions. We’re not getting what we need. How can we approve items that we’re just not getting and didn’t have the opportunity to look at? Peggy Boulay-Washington says the city is running out of vendors. Right now with the with the climate of how everyone is trying to celebrate the country’s 250th birthday that we may not have many options or options at all. The Rivers Coalition heard an update on restoration efforts on Lake Okeechobee from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. They’ve already gained back 6,000 new acres of submerged vegetation. The forecast has the lake getting as low as nine and a half feet which is more likely to be around 11 and a half feet. We’ll probably get down as low as nine and a half feet on the lake. We’ve been tracking in dry conditions and looking at this month and next month we’re going to have below normal conditions but following in March we should be in back into normal rainfall conditions. Colonel Brandon Bowman says they’re headed in the right direction in terms of lake health. So far with the lake recovery before we started we had about 3,000 acres on the lake of SAV and I think today we have what over 20,000 acres of SAV is starting to come up on the lake which is great news.
