I’m Charles Murphy reporting. LaBelle veterans are opposed to a 9-11 memorial in Veterans Park. Charles Aguila wanted to put in the 9-11 memorial for first responders. The city could move it to outside their fire station or place it at Pocket Park. Fire Chief Brent Stephens was all for putting it at the firehouse. We would absolutely love to have it right next to our facility, right next to our campground. Tawanda Gray was upset veterans had to sit for over two hours before being heard on the issue. Look at these people. I’m upset for them. If I’m aching the way that I am, I can only imagine how they feel. That should have been tabled and we should have gone first. Aguila questioned why there is such a dispute. Every veteran that I’ve talked to at the VA, Sheriff’s Department, Fire Department, everywhere else cannot understand why this is a battle. None of them, not a one, has said, I don’t understand. Yeah, no, it should only be for veterans. The Florida Highway Patrol expects record traffic on Florida roads for the Thanksgiving holiday. The state continues to have high rates of traffic crashes, some 30,000 crashes each month. Some 4.7 million vehicles expected to travel this week. Lieutenant Greg Bueno has some things that motorists can do to make things safer. Focusing on your level of patience, slowing your vehicle down, putting your phones down, and doing all those necessary things to drastically reduce the volume of crashes that we’re seeing. He appealed to the public to help lawmen keep the roads safer. But our job in leading in those efforts could be made a whole lot easier, and the volume of traffic crashes that we experience could be brought way down if everybody adopts the same mindset. New Life Ministries in Moorhaven is adding a school at their church on Avenue A. Pastor Yolanda Scott told Moorhaven City Council they want to make sure the zoning of the church would allow the school. City officials say as long as they get proper licenses and permits from the state, the school would be allowed there. Scott says they would bring therapists, both speech and physical, and other specialists to that Christian school. There are only 50 children that are registered in a private school in this county. Many families in our area struggle to access specialized services. With New Life Academy, our primary focus would be children with disabilities. Pahokee could consider a leash law after a woman walking her dogs was attacked by pit bulls on West Main Street. Alice Whitaker says she was taken to the hospital for three dog bites and required stitches. Her little dog was also injured. Whitaker says she doesn’t want to remember what happened. And one of them broke loose and come knock me down and got my little dog and dropped him. Then he come back and he bit me three times. I know y’all probably can’t do much about it, but they’ve got five pit bulls in that house over there. Mayor Keith Babb suggested some kind of action from animal control, and he thinks the city should consider a leash law. To protect our residents, and I’m surprised that animal control wouldn’t even do anything. You was attacked and bit. I heard about that and I was kind of disgusted that their hands were pretty much tied. I’m Charles Murphy, WAFC News.
