I’m Charles Murphy reporting. The Henry County School Board again expressed displeasure with the City of Clewiston turning down school zone cameras in the city limits and the resulting citations. The Henry County Sheriff’s Office reports the citations continue to increase across the county. The school board is considering buying lights with flashing signs to get the attention of motorists. Superintendent Michael Swindle had this comment about Clewiston opposing school zone cameras. I think that it’s incumbent upon us to educate and keep kids safe and apparently they don’t see eye to eye with that. He also supports buying these school zone signs. The whole purpose of this is to increase safety in those school zones and we’re generated so far $77,000 right? Yes. And so I would be okay with helping buy you know those said signs because at the end of the day that’s reinvesting it and making it safer. The Palm Beach Ethics Commission cleared South Bay City Manager Leandre Camel of certain ethics violations alleged by City Commissioner Barbara King. This is Alan Blass with the Ethics Commission. The commission concluded that probable cause did not exist because there was no evidence that respondent took any action that violated the Palm Beach County Code of Ethics. Therefore it is ordered and adjudged that the complaint against respondent Leandre Camel is hereby dismissed. Ten violations were alleged by Ms. King. She alleged nepotism by the hiring of a nephew of the Mayor Jeffrey Willis, the misuse of funds, abuse of authority, misuse of a city credit card and city vehicles, a lack of vehicle logs and mileage reports, making unapproved payments and contracts, unequal treatment and retaliation against her and her family. King also claimed Camel allowed a Parks and Recreation Department van to be used by Vice Mayor Teranza McKelvin for a school field trip. She says her request to use the van for a senior citizen prom was denied. She also sent complaints to the Florida Ethics Commission. The Palm Beach hearing focused on Camel’s alleged suspended license. Camel was given a chance to answer questions by the commission about the driver’s license suspension. Are you aware that you were suspended? No. Were you made aware that you had to comply with certain orders of the court or financial reasons or show a registration to put your license back in good standing? Were you aware of that? No. Camel told the ethics attorney that his license was never suspended. Your license suspended. If you look at the court record, it shows your license is suspended again. No. A 26-year-old Pahokee woman, Danesha McDermott, is charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. Palm Beach County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a disturbance in the area of Doveland Drive and found McDermott had been trying to strike the victim with a knife. Several witnesses had assisted the victim and prevented her from being injured. The victim eventually ran into an apartment and locked the door. Some of the attack was caught on a ring camera. She was held without bond and is also facing a charge of criminal mischief. I’m Charles Murphy, WAFC News.
