Florida State Dessert
A delicious move by Governor Ron DeSantis this week, as he signed Senate Bill 1006, designating the Strawberry Shortcake with natural Florida dairy topping as the official state dessert. The official designation is a tribute to Florida strawberry farmers who produce 75 percent of the winter strawberry crop in the United States. The Governor signed the bill into law at the Florida Strawberry Festival, which is going on right now, and held every year in Plant City, Florida. Approximately 200,000 strawberry shortcakes are served at the Florida Strawberry Festival every year.
Pahokee Mayor Babb Re-Elected
There’s a lot to celebrate in Pahokee as of late, as Mayor Keith Babb claimed victory Tuesday night against his opponent, Vice Mayor Regina Bohlen. This will be Babb’s third term in office. He said he’ll spend the next three years focused on attracting new business to Pahokee and adding jobs to the area. He’s also working on affordable housing in the city, saying a 41 -unit housing development will come online next month, which will help create more affordable homes in the area. Pahokee is in the middled of centennial celebrations this month, with their upcoming gala on March 12. The city also celebrates the release of a documentary serious on PBS entitled “Outta the Muck”.
Florida Gas Prices and Local Price Hike
The average price of gas in Florida rose by 15 cents over night and by 55 cents per gallon in the past week. It is an unprecedented hike in such a short time. AAA Spokesperson and senior product manager Mark Jenkins says if you’re caught of guard, well, you shouldn’t be, because the price per barrel has been raising for some time now. The average price in Clewiston was 4 dollars and 20 cents per gallon today. AAA says it is not sure how long this will last.
New Fire Station Planned for Hendry County
Glades County Commissioners approved a 1 point 76-million-dollar contract to construct a new fire station north of LaBelle. They received 9 hundred thousand from the state for the project. They also approved a land swap with Lykes Brothers for 20 acres that is needed. They also added six races to the Glades Bicycling series from April 10 to June 26.
Pedestrian Killed in Belle Glade
A Belle Glade man was involved in a fatal traffic crash Tuesday morning involving a pedestrian. 18-year-old Brandon Bryant was traveling west on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard yesterday just after 6 AM. According to Palm Beach County Sheriff Offices Criminal Investigations Division, pedestrian Jeannette Giles traveled into the roadway and into the path of Bryant’s vehicle. Giles suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased at the crash scene. She was 67-year-old. No charges are pending at this time.
