Detectives are investigating a shooting in South Bay Tuesday afternoon.

The 10-year-old Cape Coral boy accused of threatening a mass shooting at his elementary school has officially been charged.

The boy’s father, Dereck Marquez, said the family got the news Tuesday afternoon, Attorney Doug Molloy said he’s surprised the 10-year-old is being charged saying there’s a missing element, the validity of what deputies call the threat.

Marguez son is accused of texting a classmate at Patriot Elementary last month. It included a google image of money and a gun. In a third text, he wrote “Get ready for water day.”

This case got local, national and international attention because Lee County Sheriff Carmine Marceno posted the 10 yr old’s mug shot and perp walk on Facebook, one month ago.

Marquez son is s a minor, and while this has played out publicly, in the courts, cases against minors are confidential.

Dereck Marquez says he and his son will fight this in public and in court to get justice. They say the sheriff gave them no choice.

The State Attorney’s Office said Daniel has been charged with a written threat to conduct a mass shooting or an act of terrorism.

Molloy says they will go before a judge next month.

Ground was broken Tuesday morning in the construction of a new shopping center off Corkscrew Road in East Lee County.

Developers say the Shoppes at Verdana Village, located on Corkscrew Road, will be a one-stop shop for neighbors in the area, to include a Publix supermarket, retail stores and restaurants.

The area is growing and the developers say the county wants to offer more to the community via this shopping center.

Publix is going to occupy around 49,000 square feet of the development and another 15,000 feet will be for the retail and restaurant spaces.

Many of those who lives right where the Shoppes will be built, says this is exactly what the area needs, the closest groceries store is miles away and the idea of a 2 stories Publix has lots excited.

Glades Central three-star wide receiver Shaborne Demps was one of three receivers to take an official visit to West Lafayette this weekend “Everything went great. He loved the campus, loved the environment, the coaches and love the attitude Purdue has.

Demps especially enjoyed getting to spend time with the Purdue coaching staff. Specifically, Garret McGee and the Boilermakers’ head coach Jeff Brohm who plans to use Demps all over the field.

And for Demps after having watched what Brohm did with former Purdue wide receiver and current Arizona Cardinal Rondale Moore he knows he could truly be used like that in the Boilermakers offense.

Being able to show Demps how Moore was used at Purdue is a big plus for Jeff Brohm and co. in this recruitment.

Demps stated that he like the whole place around and the neighbors around us that live on campus are pretty nice.”

Demps also runs track for Glades Central and has a personal best of 10.7 in the 100-meter dash.
