On March 8, the Governor issued Executive Order 21-62, amending the initial order which stated that general populations must be 65 and older in order to be vaccinated for COVID-19. This order expands vaccinations to include those now, 60 and older. This change takes effect on Monday, March 15.  During this first phase of vaccine administration, all providers administering any COVID-19 vaccine shall only vaccinate the following populations:

  • Long-term care facility residents and staff;
  • Persons 60 years of age and older;
  • Health care personnel with direct patient contact;
  • K-12 school employees 50 years of age and older;
  • Sworn law enforcement officers 50 years of age and older; and
  • Firefighters 50 years of age and older.

The Hendry County Health Department in Clewiston will take WALK-INS and appointments for the Moderna Vaccine, Saturday March 13th 8:30 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. The address is 1100 South Olympia Street in Clewiston. No pets are allowed and proper identification is required. For those who cannot make it on Saturday, Walk-ins will be taken on Sunday in Glades County at the training center. Age stipulations still apply for these vaccination sites until March 15, requiring residents be 65 and older, teachers, law enforcement and firefighters 50 and older, and frontline healthcare workers.

On March 5, detectives with the Hendry County Sheriff’s office, closed a thirty-year-old sexual battery case that involved several juvenile victims and a man from LaBelle. Last November, Detectives received information concerning a sexual battery of a child under the age of 12 which occurred approximately thirty years ago. After a months long investigation, detectives identified six separate victims around the age of 12, that were also victims during that time.  HCSO Detectives traveled as far as North Carolina to interview these victims. On Friday, Hendry County Detectives obtained an arrest warrant which produced computers containing images of child pornography. At this time, 66-year-old Robert Michael Gatch, of Labelle, was arrested. He is charged with three 3 counts of Sexual Battery of a Victim Under 12 Years of Age and fourteen 14 counts of Possession of Child Pornography. The investigation is ongoing. 

The Glades Initiative offers weekly food distribution to anyone in need, whether walking or driving. Those coming in cars are asked to line up beside the office for drive-through pick-up this Wednesday from 9:30 AM – 10:30 AM. Both drivers and walkers will receive food bags on a first-come-first-serve basis. The food distribution will take place at the Glades Initiative at 141 SE Avenue C, Belle Glade. In accordance with Chapter 775 of the Florida Statutes, the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office is advising the public about a declared Sexual Predator, Joseph M Carmona, who is now residing at 104 Pelican Lake Drive, Pahokee.

Congratulations are in order for Isac Martinez. Martinez is a member of the Clewiston High School Wrestling team, who competed in the state championship in Kissimmee over the weekend, alongside fellow Tiger wrestler Hisham Ramadan. Martinez placed 5th in the Florida High School Athletic Association State Championships. Clewiston High School administrators took to their social media pages to congratulate him, posting, “Good job Isac, we are so proud of you.” CHS’ own Isac Martinez, ranking 5th in the entire state in high school wrestling. Cowboy wrestlers Justin Connell and Zach Mann represented LaBelle High School over the weekend for a shot at a state title as well. Mann made it to second day and advanced 5 rounds, just missing a metal. What an exciting season for both the Cowboys and the Tigers wrestling teams, respectively!! See ya next season wrestlers!
