Florida is once again addressing an overwhelmingly dangerous and rampant issues in our state: human trafficking. Attorney general Ashley Moody hosted the annual human trafficking summit Tuesday. Corporal Alan Wilkett of the Pasco County Sheriff’s office says many human trafficking victims were victims of abuse as children. Lt. Governor Jeannette Nunez says everyone involved in human trafficking has to be held accountable. The Hendry County Sheriff’s Office along with the Tourism Development Council have partnered to provide a free Human Trafficking Awareness Training to local hospitality partners. Democratic candidate for Governor…Congressman Charlie Crist…says you can expect another proposal to purchase land from US Sugar if he’s elected next year. He notes his administration did make some progress in a previous effort. He noted the recession in 2008 mostly scuttled the deal. He says the purchase of land will help with lake Okeechobee water quality. 

Florida reported 3,782 additional COVID-19 infections and three more deaths tied to the coronavirus in the latest data posted Wednesday by the CDC. Florida has verified 3,594,182 cases and 55,625 deaths tied to COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic. The state has averaged just over 4,100 new cases per day over the past week, continuing a downward trend since the peak of the summer surge in August when 21,000+ new cases were being identified each day. Florida has now gone five consecutive days with fewer than 5,000 new cases, according to the CDC data. That last happened in the early days of July. Hospitalizations and positivity rates are also dropping across the state.

The Palm Beach County School Board voted 7-0 to name interim Superintendent Michael Burke to a permanent spot. Burke took over on an interim basis when Dr. Donald Fennoy announced his resignation in July. Burke served as the school district’s chief financial officer before being appointed as the interim superintendent. The board voted to move forward, formalizing a contract for Burke. If approved, he will become the districts 27th superintendent.
