Wal-Mart temporarily closed its LaBelle location on Wednesday, August 18 at 2 p.m., as part of a company-initiated program. This closure, according to the company, allows extra time for a third-party specialist, to further sanitize the store, and will also give associates additional time to restock shelves and prepare the store, to properly serve the community. According to a recent release, managers plan to reopen the store to customers at 6 a.m. on August 20.

A news source says, the first seven months of this year have seen a record 900-plus manatees die. The total is expected to hit as many as 1,200 by the end of the year. The Save the Manatee Club and two other nonprofits have given the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service warning, that they plan to sue if more isn’t done to protect the sea animal. According to state data, 905 Manatees have already died this year, breaking the record of 830 in 2017. Factors like lack of seagrasses, is reportedly part of the larger problem. Sources say Red Tide plays a part as well. Before seagrasses began disappearing, the manatee, had just a half percent chance of becoming extinct in the next one hundred years, but with the water quality issues, there is now a six percent chance.

The remains of an endangered Florida panther were collected on Sunday in Collier County. The cause of death for the 2 or 3-year-old big cat is not yet known. This is the 20th reported panther death this year, according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. If you see a dead panther on the side of a road or in the wild, officials ask that you reach out to the FWC to report it. Biologists gain valuable information by examining panther remains. Florida’s District 6 includes the communities of Belle Glade, Pahokee and South Bay. Michelle Oyola McGovern is one of four candidates who wants to replace outgoing Commissioner Melissa McKinlay. McKinlay has already endorsed McGovern as her preferred successor. Along with that, Mayor Steve Wilson, Vice Mayor Mary Ross Wilkerson and Commissioner Kenny Berry of Belle Glade are all endorsing McGovern’s bid. Pahokee Mayor Keith Babb and South Bay Mayor Joe Kyles are also getting behind McGovern’s. She’s hoping a round of support from officials in her home district, can help her gain support the running.

20 students in Hendry County School District have tested positive for COVID-19 as of this morning, and 128 are ordered to quarantine, according the Hendry County’s Covid-19 dashboard.  7 teachers recently tested positive, and 3 are in quarantine. Administrators are advising the parents that if any member of your household is sick and/or awaiting COVID results, keep them home until they receive a negative test result. The COVID-19 dashboard is updated in nearly real time, and may change throughout the day.
