On August 11, City of Pahokee Mayor Keith Babb presented the “Key to the City” to the South Florida Water Management District (District) for their assistance with cleaning up the blue-green algal blooms at the Pahokee Marina. The District also turned on brand-new circulator pumps to keep the water moving at the Pahokee Marina and aid in the prevention of new blue-green algal blooms. An order was passed by the state in 2019 which prioritized agency resources to expedite water quality projects and prioritize algae response resources.  The “Key to the City” is a symbolic gesture that is given to distinguished citizens, residents, or honored guests of the City of Pahokee. The Mayor may award the key to people, companies or agencies that have contributed positively to the City and the lives of its residents.

The Governor’s Office of Florida announced, almost 177,000 Disaster Relief Payments of up to $1,000 will be distributed to Florida’s educators in recognition of their hard work to educate students in the 2020-2021 school year. Florida was the first state to reopen and ensure in-person instruction would be made available to parents five days a week. The governor’s office released a statement that reads, although all students need world-class educators in the front of classrooms, students especially in need are students with disabilities, those with food insecurities and those in need of mental health or who are suffering from abuse at home.

Educators Eligible for Disaster Relief Funds include,

  • Full-time K-12 classroom teachers, Certified prekindergarten teachers, and Principals, who were employed in a district or at a charter school as of June 2, 2021, or on the last day of school.

The number of COVID-19 cases logged in Florida increased by a record 24,753 on Tuesday. The death count rose by 4. The latest numbers from the Department of Health and Human Services and the CDC come after the federal agencies amended almost all numbers recorded in Florida since the beginning of the pandemic. The death count, which crossed the 40,000 mark earlier this week, did not decrease with the updates. The positivity rate in Florida is now 19.79 over seven days. A local news affiliate reports, at least 2000 COVID-19 patients in Florida are on ventilators, and nearly half of all ICU patients in Florida are suffering from COVID-19.

Things are still heating up in Pahokee after allegations of corruption and a number of city leaders being fired. The mayor declared a state of emergency, saying the city is in an uproar after several meetings held by city commissioners have gotten tense. Members of the commission held a special meeting Wednesday morning to officially fire city attorney Burnadette Norris-Weeks and remove the Interim City Manager Rodney Lucas. Three commissioners confirmed the contract of Gary Brandenburg as the city attorney. For now, Brandenburg has also been named the interim city manager until someone is hired full-time. A town hall meeting has been set for Monday night. Commissioners on Wednesday also voted to end the state of emergency in Pahokee.
