Troopers investigate death
A pedestrian was struck and killed crossing State Road 70 west on Monday night.
Okeechobee County sheriff deputies said the accident occurred just east of the US 98 intersection.
The Florida Highway Patrol is yet to release details on this incident.
In politics, David McCaulay is one of five candidates running for Okeechobee City Council.
He participated in a recent forum that addressed issues like city spending, code enforcement, and how to handle growth.
McCaulay said he’d like to see affordable apartments for young professionals in the city.
“What we need and what we have a shortage of is high quality, multi-residential places for people to live. HCA Raulerson Hospital CEO Brian Melear said they want to get young doctors. When they move to town young doctors are not going to buy homes and want high quality apartments. Most of them are carrying debt from medical school.”
He said the downtown parks need to be maintained to help encourage people to stop and stay in Okeechobee.

Learned nine state legislative staffers recently visited Hendry County for the annual South Florida Ag Foundation farm tour.
Hillary Hyslope said that is an important event to educate the state legislature on farming.
“They learned a lot on Lake Okeechobee, our complex water systems, and a lot about farming in the Everglades Agriculture Area.”
The city also is making progress on the flag pole project on US 27 entering Clewiston.
The Hendry County Fair Board will provide some funding for the flag pole project.
A Moore Haven man, Brett Budreau was charged with felony criminal mischief for allegedly causing $1,300 in property damage to a home in the Yacht Club.
Glades County deputies said Budreau, 20, also damaged a vehicle during the incident.
Deputies said Budreau was armed with three large knives and allegedly cut one person in the home.
The City of Okeechobee Board of Adjustments delayed a month action on a 160 foot cell phone tower.
It is proposed for CSX railroad property at 1117 NW 9th Street.
Board member Mac Jonassaint asked why put it in Deans Court.
“How many of those towers have you installed in minority communities. My concern is because where this one will be located in. Residents ask why? Why in our neighborhood and not someplace else?”
A representative of the applicant said the tower will improve cell phone coverage for AT&T customers.
The city did approve a 7-unit multi-family residential project in the 1000 block of NW 4th Street.
