Debris cleanup continues

Okeechobee County crews have been busy collecting yard and other storm debris around the county.

County Spokeswoman Denise Whitehead said there is no timetable on when the pickups will end.

FEMA added Okeeechobee County to the list of counties where residents are eligible for individual assistance.

You can go to www.disasterassistance.gov to apply for assistance.

Residents can apply for temporary lodging and residential costs, home repairs, person property repairs and replacement, and transportation costs.

It will help homeowners and residents who are uninsured or under insured.

Three people are behind bars after an Okeechobee drug bust.

A search of the Okeechobee Narcotics Task Force, Drug Enforcement Agency and Florida’s Department of Law Enforcement at 16534 NW 282nd Street turns up 18 grams of methamphetamine, marijuana and drug possession.

46 year old John Meara and 40 year old Kristine Clendenin were charged with methamphetamine trafficking.

20 year old Justin Clendenin faces marijuana related charges.

Finalized the city budget of $9.93 million.

The property taxes collected will go up just under 6.2 percent.

Former Vice Mayor Regina Bohlen said the final budget hearing should not have been held during a hurricane.

She said those in attendance should have been at home getting their properties ready for Ian.

The commission voted to not put the name of former city attorney Gary Brandenburg on a youth football scoreboard he helped fund.

A citizens committee wants to send out $150 checks to residents and up to $5,000 checks to businesses from the American Recovery Act funding.  They would also set aside money for home repairs.
