“Shop With A Cop” Event in Clewiston

The Clewiston Police Department along with Walmart, partnered for their annual “Shop With A Cop function”, which took place over the weekend. The department accepted donations from the community in order to give kids, who were hand-picked, the opportunity to go into the superstore, with an assigned officer, to spend $100 each on whatever they like. Kids bought hoverboards, gaming devices, sports equipment and even bicycles. The happy bunch piled into fire engines, police cars, and other emergency vehicles, complete with sights and sounds. Clewiston Public Safety Academy was on the grounds, leading arts and crafts and supervising bounce house activity. Thirty lucky kids were selected to shop.

Shooting on Hendry Elementary School Campus

The Hendry County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a shooting in the area of Upthegrove Elementary School in LaBelle on Saturday. Reports say the suspect fired the weapon at another individual. According to HCSO, there were no injuries and detectives are still investigating. Authorities say this was an isolated incident and the public was not in danger. Reportedly, those involved were in the area for a non-school related event.

Shooting in Belle Glade, 1 Dead

Teri Barbera, Public Information Officer for the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office, says, shortly before 9 AM yesterday, deputies responded to a shooting on Avenue A in Belle Glade, where deputies located one male deceased. The male shooter has been identified as 41-year-old Ivan Spencer of South Bay. Authorities say Spencer was present for questioning when deputies arrived at the scene. Spencer was booked into the PBC Jail on first degree murder charges. He is scheduled for his first appearance today. PBSO is still in the preliminary stages of this investigation.

8-Vehicle Crash in Hendry County

The Florida Highway patrol is investigating what they are calling a chain reaction traffic crash with injuries on US 27 involving 6 commercial motor vehicles, a pick-up truck, an SUV and a car. The crash resulted in 4 injuries, one of them in critical condition as of Friday. No one from the crash was identified in the report. The accident happened in Glades County at the intersection of US 27 and Charlie Miner Memorial Highway. More information will be released, when it becomes available.

Breaking Ground on Affordable Housing in Western Palm Beach County

Earlier this year, Pahokee city officials had a public discussion, about affordable rental housing at the site where the hospital used to sit. According to an affiliate, in March, the city sold six acres of land to a developer to begin the project. The proposal reportedly includes 60 apartments to be built. The city said developers are expected to break ground on the project right after the new year. The goal is to have families move in by late 2022. The complex is tentatively named Everglades Memorial Gardens, and will offer an on-site community center, space for a day care center and greenspace. Another complex is expected to be built on the site of the former Everglades High School.


Florida added 12,984 new cases of coronavirus over the last week. The state’s COVID-19 death toll now stands at 62,026, up 325 from a week earlier. The health department reported 122,513 more Floridians were vaccinated in the week ending Thursday.

Market on Bond is back with its final event of 2021. On December 18th from 9am-1pm, shop fresh Florida produce, and other local vendors. Santa Claus will be making a special appearance as well. Bring the little ones to visit with Santa and enter the ornament painting contest! Saturday December 18 on Bond Street from 9 to 1pm.
