Palm Beach County’s Interim Superintendent of Schools Michael Burke, suggested Thursday he’s not ruling out a face mask mandate for the upcoming school year. Burk said it’s too early to say if the school district will impose a mask mandate for children and staff members, but he is watching the latest developments COVID-19 Delta variant vary closely. Neighboring Broward County Schools decided late Wednesday to require all students, staff members, and visitors to wear facial coverings inside schools, regardless of their vaccination status. However, Gov. Ron DeSantis has strongly expressed his negativity toward mask mandates in schools, even threatening legislative action to prevent school districts from imposing those requirements.
On Wednesday, Florida reported 17,589 new COVID-19 cases and 56 deaths, according to the CDC. The nationwide death toll was 397. The data show that 48.7 percent of the state’s population was fully vaccinated as of Wednesday, putting Florida just below the nearly 50% percent national average. Increasing numbers of COVID-19 cases led the CDC to revise mask requirements for fully vaccinated people, with the government recommending that they wear masks in indoor public places in areas of “substantial or high” transmission. The rising case numbers also have prompted some hospitals across the state to require staff members to get vaccinated.

The Pahokee City Commission is now debating who their true city attorney is. Once again, they couldn’t successfully get through a meeting without shouting and ending early. Two attorneys showed up Gary Brandenburg and Bernadette Norris Weeks. Weeks insisted she is still the city attorney, and cautions the board to not entangle itself in anymore issues. Vice Mayor Regina Bohlen and Mayor Keith Babb exchanged insults before the meeting came to an abrupt halt. According to the Pahokee City website, Weeks holds the city attorney position.
