Governor Ron DeSantis announced that the state of Florida will be providing up to one million rapid tests as needed for residents of assisted living facilities and nursing homes. Governor DeSantis made the announcement during a visit to the Rehabilitation Center of the Palm Beaches where he met with leaders in the senior care industry and discussed the importance of allocating resources for high-value testing that prioritizes Florida’s seniors, all of whom are eligible for monoclonal antibodies as well as other early treatments.

On Wednesday evening January 5th at around 8:07, a car crash claimed the life of a Pahokee man in Palm Beach County. The Florida Highway Patrol reports, the 65-year-old driver was involved in a separate vehicle crash on SR 80 and Custard Apple Blvd. While exiting the vehicle, the man was struck by a 47-year-old driver, a woman from Pahokee, who failed to observe the man, disabled on the roadway. The man was pronounced deceased on the scene. This case is still pending investigation.

A beloved mother, wife and all-around good neighbor was killed in vehicle crash in Belle Glade on January 5. Palm Beach County Sheriffs Office reports at around 11:22 a.m., Clara Brown Hessing was traveling eastbound on State Road 80 approaching the driveway entrance of the Belle Glade jail and Glades Health Center parking lot. Micius Novembre was stopped at the entrance, attempting to turn left and travel westbound on State Road 80. As Hessing approached the driveway, Novembre entered the intersection and collided with Hessings vehicle, causing her car to overturn, ejecting her, and then landing on top of her. She was pronounced deceased on the scene. Clara Brown Hessing, affectionately known as “Cookie”, was 55.

On November 30, Dawn Vaughn and her husband Tommy Vaughn were involved in a tragic motorcycle crash in Hendry County. The couple were both hospitalized in stable but critical condition. Hendry County Sheriff’s Office reported that Dawn Vaughn unfortunately passed away on New Year’s Eve. She was surrounded by her husband, Tommy, her son Tommy, Jr., and his wife Susan along with her best friend, Beth McDougall. A public viewing is scheduled for Monday January 10 from 5 to 7 at Akin Davis in LaBelle.

Road construction continues on CR835 in Clewiston. The work includes repairing portions of CR835 near Obern Road in southern Hendry County. The limits of construction activities will be from approximately 1/2 mile south of Obern Road to 2 miles north of Obern Road. Roadwork operations will continue through 5:00 pm.
