Hendry County Sheriff’s Office executed a search warrant on a local area home, after an investigation into child pornography. Detectives discovered that 44-year-old John Goodman had an inappropriate conversation with an undercover agent. Detectives say Goodman sent pornographic images of what appeared to be a pre-teen female, who has since been identified. Authorities say Goodman used the messaging app KIK. A release from HCSO Spokesperson Susan Harrelle says, Goodman is a former law enforcement officer who was employed with the agency for a little over 2 years, but was terminated in November of 2002 for violating Moral Character Standards. On July 1, 2021, Goodman was transported to the Hendry County Jail on charges of Distribution of Child Pornography and Using a Minor in the Production of Pornography.  His bond is set at $75,000.00.

A vehicle accident in Hendry County causes a LaBelle man to suffer serious injuries. The accident occured last week. At around 10:15 Thursday night a Chevrolet Trailblazer stopped for a stop sign on Park Avenue, at the intersection of State Road 29. It was driven by an unnamed 59-year-old LaBelle man. A Hendry County Sheriff’s Office Vehicle was traveling north on State Road 29. The trailblazer then turned left in the path of the patrol car, colliding into the front of the vehicle. The LaBelle man was transported to Lee Memorial Hospital with serious injuries. The driver of the patrol car, who is from cape coral, was transported to a local area hospital with minor injuries. No update has been provided on either of the drivers.

This week’s road watch report from the Florida Department of Transportation shows some construction projects in Hendry and Glades Counties. On SR 78 in Lakeport at the Herbert Hoover Dike crossing, crews will construct a temporary diversion road on SR 78. They are going to install a temporary bypass road, signs, and pavement markers. They’ll be milling and resurfacing SR 78, doing shoulder treatments and drainage improvements, installing guard rail, and performing other roadwork. They will also be performing some landscaping near Buckhead Ridge. In Hendry County, on SR 80 from Hendry Isles Boulevard to Everhigh Road, crews will be repairing washouts near the roadway from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday. Motorists should use caution in all areas, as crews work near and on the roadway.  

Tropical Storm Elsa introduced high winds, heavy rain, and powerful thunderstorms through Clewiston into the early morning hours today. A local resident says his home in the Hookers Point neighborhood was damaged by the short, but powerful storm. He believes, it was in fact, a tornado. The resident, who did not identify himself, says he lives off Art Lawrence Road just behind the South Florida Water Management area in Clewiston. He says he didn’t see much damage throughout the rest of the area. Weather.com predicted that tornadoes would impact our local area over Lake Okeechobee and Glades County as well. We’ll keep you posted on the latest weather report regarding Elsa, which appears to still be moving north and northwest of our area.

Glades County is in search of a new county manager, and the board will be interviewing all five candidates next week. A special meeting set for July 15th at 9 am at the training center. 

In accordance with Chapter 775, the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office is advising the public about a declared Sexual Predator, 45-year-old Marcus Shafer, who is now residing on Everglades Street in Canal Point.      

Beginning Thursday, July 8, the roads will be closed on the west end of Fort Denaud Road from SR80 to Fort Denaud Bridge Way in LaBelle. Hendry County’s contractor will be conducting drainage pipe removal and installation services in the area. Traffic control signage will be in place to detour traffic to SR80 and Huggets Road, according to County Officials. Project completion time is about 2 weeks and will occur weekdays from 7a to 7p.
