The Florida Department of Health reported 3,841 new coronavirus cases on Sunday and another 29 new resident deaths linked to COVID-19. The state has now reported 2,242,778 cases since the pandemic began. The latest reports reflects that the number of hospitalized COVID patients and deaths in South Florida as a whole have been on the decline. More than 5.67 million people in Florida have received at least one dose of a COVID vaccine. So far, 6,328,296 people have completed the series of doses required to be vaccinated. That represents about 29.46% of the population.

Local authorities in Glades County notified the FAA of a plane crash in the North part of the county on Thursday. The crash happened about 10 miles southwest of Okeechobee at around 4:30 on April 29. The downed plane was found in an open field and two passengers were taken to a hospital, according to the Glades County Sheriff’s Office. Several GCSO units responded alongside fire crews and EMS. The crash is being investigated by the FAA and NTSB.

New details have emerged in a murder that happened in Pahokee. A second man is now facing criminal charges in connection to the incident. The Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office arrested 38-year-old Anthony Bernard Evans of Pahokee, on charges of first-degree murder and attempted first-degree murder. On Sunday, April 25, investigators said Evans and Lanorris Lamar Lee, walked up to a 23-year-old man as he walked down the street with his mother and shot him. According to the arrest report, investigators said the murder victim allegedly shot another man in a car, hours earlier. The victim in that shooting refused to cooperate with investigators. Evans is due in court Friday morning.

On Friday April 30th, a federal court in Fort Pierce, permanently barred a Florida tax return preparer from preparing federal tax returns for others. According to the complaint, Brandhi Shaw prepared tax returns in Belle Glade, at Premier Financial Services and Premium Financial Solutions. The complaint alleges that Shaw prepared tax returns that purposefully understated the tax her customers owed or overstated the refunds they were entitled to claim. Return preparer fraud is one of the IRS’ Dirty Dozen Tax Scams, and taxpayers seeking a return preparer should remain vigilant.

The Brown Sugar Festival is an annual event held in the Harlem Community that takes place during the first week of May.  Brown Sugar’s purpose is to celebrate Black Heritage and provide scholarships to local students. Well what started as a fun-filled event with nearly 3,000 people from all over the state, ended in tragedy Saturday night. 20-year-old Evereonna Sankey was killed and 3 others injured, when gunshots rang out at around 9:30. Deputies immediately responded and located the victim, and began providing CPR, however the victim died as a result of her injuries. Founder and President of the Brown Sugar Festival, Reverend Gwendolyn Patrick Griffiths was clearly under duress when she spoke to the media. The medical condition of the other 3 injured is not known at this time.

Teacher Appreciation Week is celebrated in the first full week of May, from May 2 through May 8 in 2021, and is when teachers get the extra credit they deserve. The big day is Teacher Appreciation Day on May 4, but teachers are just so great that they get a whole week to savor our appreciation.  Whether you have a teacher, know a teacher, or are a teacher, there are endless ways to give a little extra support to teachers and teachers organizations. Teaching is known to be a time-consuming and challenging profession, so this week is our chance to say thank you to those that play or have played such a huge role in our lives.
