A Clewiston man was involved in a vehicle crash in Palm Beach County just south of SR80 on Hwy27 North. In the early morning hours on Sunday, the 45-year-old was driving north on 27 as a 44-year-old Hialeah woman followed in her own vehicle. According to the traffic report released by FHP, the Clewiston man, who was operating a tractor trailer began to slow to make a turn. The woman, did not have time to slow down before colliding into the rear of the truck. She was transferred to St. Mary’s where she succumbed to her injuries. An investigation is pending.

Hendry County deputies breaking up a block party in LaBelle were involved in a shooting early Sunday. The Hendry County Sheriff’s Office said deputies were in the area of Kissimmee and Selma Daniels avenues at around 1:45 a.m. when shots rang out. Deputies went to that area and an “officer-involved shooting occurred,” according to the sheriff’s office. HCSO said they do not believe anyone was seriously injured in the incident, and the deputies involved will be placed on administrative leave during an investigation by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement. The sheriff’s office is asking anyone with information, photos or video footage from the scene to contact them. That information can be submitted anonymously.

As of May17 at 10 AM, the Florida Department of Health has reported the latest number of positive cases for the coronavirus in Hendry County is 211. Our county now has 12 deaths. Although we see numbers for the virus continue to rise, recoveries have held steady at 28 since May 9. The brings our county to 171 ACTIVE positive cases. Gov. Ron DeSantis has announced more plans to reopen state businesses. In a May 15 press conference, the governor said gyms can reopen today. Restaurants, retail shops, museums and libraries may now operate at 50% capacity. The governor said some restaurants may put Plexiglas partitions between booths.

He said theme parks may submit reopening plans, which must be approved by local officials. There is no projected date yet for reopening of movie theaters. But, drive-in movie theaters are fine, said the governor. Bars, however, are still closed.

Firefighters were on the scene of a collision between two sugar cane trains in Pahokee Friday afternoon. The crash occurred shortly before 3:30 p.m. near the intersection of East Main Street and Larrimore Rd. According to Palm Beach County Fire Rescue, the trains were in low speed and there was no derailment. Two people on the trains were treated on location and were not required to be transported to a hospital. No more information was immediately available.

A 29-year-old Okeechobee man walked away with only minor injuries however a Belle Glade man was not so lucky, as he lost his life in an accident Friday morning in Martin County that involved at least three vehicles and forced a road closure in Okeechobee County. Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) troopers say the Okeechobee man was driving a pickup truck north on State Road 15 just north of State Road 76 near Stuart a little after 6:15 when for unknown reasons he drifted into the southbound lane and struck a tractor trailer head on. The impact sent the pickup truck rotating clockwise, striking another car head on and then overturning on the shoulder of the road. Meanwhile the tractor trailer also overturned after colliding with the Okeechobee man’s pickup. The tractor trailer driver, a 43-year-old man from Belle Glade, was pronounced dead by on-scene medics. The driver of the other car, a 40-year-old Loxahatchee man, received minor injuries. The accident is being investigated.
