On Sunday at 6:26 a.m., Palm Beach County Fire Rescue crews responded to reports of a fire on the 600 block of SW 16th Street in Belle Glade. Firefighters reported smoke and flames from the downstairs unit of an apartment building. They quickly started a fire attack and were able to bring the fire under control.  Albert Borroto, Public Information Officer for Palm Beach County Fire Rescue, says the fire was successfully extinguished, and as a bonus, encountered a surprise rescue of 2 guinea pigs. Borroto says he is grateful for the American Red Cross for their efforts, and thankful no one was seriously hurt.

Glades Media’s own Ken Keller of WOKC is being recognized in a Big way. Keller and is little brother Levi were chosen Big Brother/Little Brother of the year for BBBS of Okeechobee. According to the article, published by an affiliate news source, Levi and Keller have been supporting each other since Levi was in just 1st grade; he’ll soon be starting 5th. The article states that Keller has been going to the school to work with Levi on his reading and other assignments for the last 4 years. Even when schools closed due to the pandemic, they kept in touch by phone. The pair are uncertain about what the next year holds, but Ken and Levi are grateful to have been selected by the team.

As of Saturday July 25, 2020, the Florida Department of Health reported 9,344 new positive cases of COVID-19 in Florida; there were 77 new deaths reported. As of yesterday, Hendry County has a reported 1512 total positive cases of coronavirus since testing began in March. The death toll has reached 33. Our neighbors in Glades County report 385 total cases and 3 deaths. Florida is now number 2 in the nation for total cases with over 420,000 total cases, and close to 5900 deaths.

An accused thief in LaBelle is seen on camera stealing not one, but two cars from two different gas stations on Saturday morning. Juan Reyes said he went inside the Handy’s gas station just off Cowboy Way in LaBelle Saturday morning when he noticed an accused thief wearing a mask, hop in the front seat of his running vehicle. Security footage from the gas station shows Reyes run out to the car, grabbing at the door handle as he tries to get to the thief in the front seat. The accused thief allegedly drove about a mile away from the Handy’s, to another gas station where he crashed Reyes’ vehicle. Another victim said she ran inside a gas station around 7 a.m. Saturday, leaving her car running as well. Security footage from the second gas station shows the accused thief hop in the second car and take off. This vehicle was found hours later abandoned in Glades County. Both vehicles are in police custody as the Hendry County Sheriff’s Office investigates.
