Governor Ron DeSantis announced the appointment of Kyle Cohen to the Twentieth Circuit Court. The Twentieth Circuit encompasses Charlotte, Collier, Glades, Hendry and Lee Counties. Cohen, of Estero, has been an Assistant United States Attorney for the Middle District of Florida since 2008 and currently serves in the Civil Division of the office. He received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Florida and his law degree from Georgetown University Law Center. Cohen fills the vacancy created by the retirement of Judge Keith Cary.

Mosquito spraying with commence on June 1st in Hendry County. This truck spraying will continue weekly until further notice. The treatments will be performed during evening hours, weather permitting. 

The weekly spray schedule is as follows:

Monday –  Everhigh Acres/LaDeca, Flaghole, and Montura Ranch Estates

Tuesday – Captain Hendry Area, Fort Denaud Acres, Ft. Denaud Road, Murray Road, Phillips Road, North LaBelle, and Pioneer Plantation.

Wednesday – Felda, LaBelle Acres (Case and Evans Roads), LaBelle Ranchettes (Alphabet Roads), South SR29, Hookers Point, US 27/CR720 (CR720 Vicinity), and the Port LaBelle Areas of Castleton Acres Subdivision, Country Village, Oak Haven, Tanglewood Oaks, and Vermack Subdivision (Sandalwood Drive).

Thursday – Double J Acres, South LaBelle, and Wheeler Estates.

Friday – will serve as a make-up day for treatments missed due to weather.

Residents who live in these areas, and are assessed for the Hendry County Mosquito Control MSBU services on their property tax bill, should call Clarke at 800-443-2034 between 8:00 am and 5:00 pm Monday through Friday if they have any questions regarding mosquito control. Residents not included or assessed for the Hendry County Mosquito Control MSBU should contact their respective government or homeowners’ associations with questions or concerns. Residents in the Harlem Community with questions or concerns regarding mosquito control activities should contact the City of Clewiston.

On Tuesday, May 26th, 2020, officers of the Clewiston Police department and Hendry County EMS responded to a residence in the area of WC Owens in the city limits of Clewiston in reference to an unresponsive infant. First responders determined the child had been left in a vehicle for an unknown amount of time and was deceased. At this time a criminal investigation is pending by FDLE and no criminal charges have been filed.

This month is Mental Health Awareness Month in Okeechobee County and the County School Board took the time during their last meeting to accept the proclamation declaring it so. School Board member Amanda Riedel, who works with a children’s center that provides mental health services to kids who have gone through some mental trauma, accepted the proclamation on behalf of the board and she says this proclamation means more to her than most. Riedel says the district needs to be more open to making positive changes to adopt trauma informed care outlook systems and adding that to what the district provides academically.

Governor Ron DeSantis announced federal approval for the Pandemic EBT Program. The Department of Children and Families (DCF), in partnership with the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (FDACS), developed a P-EBT program to automatically issue benefits during the month of June to more than 2.1 million children who have temporarily lost access to free and reduced-price school meals during COVID-19-related school closures.  For more information and Frequently Asked Questions about the P-EBT benefit program, please visit

The 2020 Disaster Preparedness Sales Tax Holiday kicks off this weekend ahead of Monday’s official start of the Hurricane Season. The sales tax holiday will take place today through June 4. During the holiday, qualifying items related to disaster preparedness are exempt from sales tax. However, the sales tax exemption does not apply to the rental or repair of any of those items. This year, NOAA predicted an above-normal Atlantic hurricane season. They are forecasting for 13 to 19 named storms, where six to 10 could become hurricanes with three to six major hurricanes.
