Schools across South Florida returned to in-person session Tuesday, many with strict COVID-19 protocols still in place. Still,14 students at Glades County Schools have tested positive for COVID-19 as of yesterday, and 14 have tested positive in Hendry County Schools.  12 students are currently in quarantine in Glades, according to a Facebook post by the District, Hendry County reported 4 in quarantine on their COVID-19 Dashboard. Administrators are advising the parents that if any member of your household is sick and/or awaiting COVID results, keep them home until they receive a negative test result. Meanwhile in Palm Beach County, a far larger school district, hundreds of students have been forced to quarantine. Palm Beach County Interim Superintendent Michael Burke said 440 students have been quarantined as of Wednesday, the second day of school. A source reports, up to 6,394 students opted out of wearing face masks during the first three days of school.

A 75-year-old Moore Haven woman died this week after she lost control of her vehicle in Hendry County. At 8:30 PM Wednesday, FHP reports the woman was driving east on State Road 80 near Birchwood Parkway. The report says he lost control of the vehicle, and ran into speed limit sign, a canal and some trees. The woman was pronounced deceased on the scene. This crash remains under investigation.

A Clewiston in man was involved in a single vehicle accident Wednesday after his dump truck overturned. According to FHP, the man was driving the dump truck east on US 27 Near Bass Rd. in Hendry County. The man lost control of the vehicle causing it to overturn spilling its contents onto the roadway. The man was transported to a local hospital with only minor injuries.

A 48-year-old LaBelle man was hit on his motorcycle Thursday, when a separate driver violated his right of way. On Thursday, August 12 at 4:09 in the afternoon, the LaBelle man was driving his motorcycle on Lee Boulevard and Elva Avenue in Lee County. According to the report, a car driven by a 28-year-old Lehigh Acres woman, was traveling in the same direction of the motorcycle, before hitting the motorcycle on its right side, sending the man sliding across the lanes. The motorcyclist was transported to the hospital with serious injuries.

On Sunday, August 8, 2021, former Florida State University Head Football Coach Bobby Bowden passed away. The Governor’s Office of Florida remembers Bowden as an impactful leader who empowered his players to be the same. Bowden was the inaugural recipient of the Governor’s Medal of Freedom, the highest citizen award the Governor can give. He also holds recognition in the College Football Hall of Fame. To honor his memory, the flags of the State of Florida are directed to be flown at half-staff at the Leon County Courthouse in Tallahassee; the City Hall of Tallahassee; and the State Capitol in Tallahassee, from sunrise to sunset today.

The Health Care District of Palm Beach County mobile bus will be providing COVID-19 vaccines free-of-charge at Lakeside Medical Center. No appointments necessary. They will be located in the parking lot of Lakeside Medical Center Monday Thru Friday from 9AM to 4 PM. Free Covid 19 vaccinations at lakeside medical center parking lot at 39200 Hooker Hwy Belle Glade. Monday thru Friday 9AM to 4.
